That is why Iconography created icons contain the “central” event (for example, the Nativity of Christ) surrounded by events leading up to and after the central event.<br>The Icon of the Nativity of Christ contains beautiful symbolism and great theological depth. It reflects the realty and inner meaning of our Salvation History! Theologians often draw analogies between the icon of the Nativity and the Death and Resurrection of Christ.<br>The central figure is the Virgin Mary reclining and looking away from the infant Jesus almost in disbelief of the miraculous event. The Christ Child is wrapped in “swaddling” cloth somewhat like Christ is wrapped in linen for his burial. The Christ Child is laid in a manager as Christ was lain on a slab for his burial.<br>Lower left side: While looking away Mary looks to St Joseph who is being tempted by the devil in the form of a man asking - whose Child is this?<br>On the upper left are the three magi traveling from afar looking for the new born king. On the upper right are the shepherds and their sheep seeking Christ the Good Shephard. The inclusion of both represents all mankind. The lower left shows the midwives cleaning and caring for the Christ Child who was born a human.
