Description
This beautiful Mettlach Vileroy & Bach beer stein / pitcher depicts a woman harvesting grapes. This is an antique, circa 1900-1910, ceramic Mettlach Villeroy & Bach, 1.5L Etched and Incised German Beer Stein / Pitcher #2682 by Villeroy and Boch entitled "Woman with Grapes" or "Woman Vintner." The stein features a beautiful woman in a striped skirt and head scarf. She is choosing just the right grapes from the vines for her vintage.
The side panels are decorated with grape vines, leaves and grapes. The colors of the stein are harvest brown, greens, golds, and blues. According to my research some of these steins came with an inlay lid and some with no lid. I have seen one sold with a pewter lid, which the seller said could be a replacement.
Marked on the bottom with the Mettlach hallmark. Also marked 2682. Also other markings - see photos.
Size: about 12" high. Bottom diameter about 5". Substantial and heavy - about 3 pounds 15 ounces.
CONDITION: used but good condition for age and use. No repairs. Appears to be some discolored spots inside. On edge of top near spout seems to be a fine line mark/crack - but it's smooth if you run your finger over it - see last picture. May be some wear to color on girl's arm lifted high - underarm black line not consistent color. No chips on the bottom but brown paint that goes over from front to back has occasional minor bumps. See photos. Ask questions, if you have any.
No lid.
