Description
Very Rare Butler Patent Blowtorch - This unmarked, quart-size, gasoline-fueled blowtorch has all of the characteristics of the November 19, 1889 William P. Butler U.S. Patent No. 415,613. Unmarked torches with these features are referred to as “Butler Patent Blowtorches”. Although this torch is unmarked as to its manufacturer, it does have an ovate “GLOBE” trademark stamped into the top rear part of the tank. This mark has been seen previously on torches from the Pennsylvania Globe Co. and the Globe Light and Heat Co. The relationship to either of these companies is unknown. The tank is made of sheet brass with the sheet-brass skirt being soldered to the bottom of the tank. The top of the torch is heavy cast brass soldered to the tank. The filler plug and burner are cast bronze. The pump rod, drip cup, and control arm are made of steel. The tank is 4 inches in diameter and a little over 5 1/2 inches in height. The overall height of the torch is about 9 inches to the upper tip of the burner.
The torch is in wonderful condition. I believe the wooden control knob has been “burned”, or perhaps replaced, but I am uncertain. The torch has only two small dimples on the left front side of the tank, which is highly unusual for a torch of this age (about 130-years old). The Butler Patent torches are described and illustrated on pages 58 and 59 in the book
